Do you want to know about the Air Conditioner Refrigerants? Also, which Refrigerants are good to choose when buying AC? Don’t worry we are here to help you get good AC for your home or office.
Come on let’s go into the article to get the knowledge of Refrigerants

What is Air Conditioner Refrigerants? How does it work?
Air Conditioner Refrigerants is nothing but a substance/mixture used for refrigeration. It may be in any form like fluid or gas or liquid. It can immediately absorb heat from the atmosphere and provides air conditioning when connecting other components like compressors and evaporators.
We can say that it is the core heart of the cooling or freezing technology. Without this AC technology will not work.
Air conditioners have refrigerants within copper spirals/coils. It sucks heat air inside the room, that shifts a low-pressure gas to a high-pressure fluid. The other components in the AC help to send out of the room by the exhaust outlet.
Types Of Refrigerants:
There are four most common types of Refrigerants are used in our history of AC. They are
- Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) or ( R12)
- Hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) or (R22)
- Hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) or (R410A & R134)
Let see in detailed.
R12:
Initially, we used R12 which is Chlorofluorocarbons as a refrigerant. But later in 1994, it is stopped due to the cause of greenhouse effect and ozone depletion. R12 got outdated in new AC models But still, it is used on much older Air Conditioner.
Most of the top dealers are not selling this refrigerant AC nowadays. In case If you see this R12 refrigerant in the specification don’t choose the product.
R-22:
Later 1994 the technology pick Hydrochlorofluorocarbon as a refrigerant. Compared to Chlorofluorocarbons it is little better. But it also causes harm to the environment and depletion of the ozone layer.
As per the report, 50% of AC users using this refrigerant in their Air Conditioner. And soon it will be outdated. Many of the products in top deals having this R22 refrigerant AC at less price. Don’t choose only by seeing with the price also look into the specification part.
R-410A, R-32, and R-134:
R-410A, R-32, and R-134 are using Hydrofluorocarbons which is better when compared to above Hydrochlorofluorocarbon.
We can say that it is partially safe for the environment because it will not cause any ozone depletion but it causes global warming.
If we compare R-32 with R-410A concerning global warming, R-32 is better than R-410.
R-290 and R-600A :
The latest refrigerant R-290 (Propane) and R-600A (Iso-Butane) are using Hydrocarbons. Which is far far better than Hydrofluorocarbons which given above. It does not cause any ozone depletion and environment-friendly one.
But there is a small disadvantage regarding Hydrocarbons and Hydrofluorocarbons. Both are highly flammable.
In modern AC technology R-600A (Iso-Butane) used in most of the latest AC. And there is no report of accident by using it.
R-290 and R-600A are not the only environmental-friendly. It is also energy efficient. Let check some other specification like seer rating in the chart.
Refrigerant | Global Warming Potential | Ozone Depletion Potential | Flammable test |
R-22 | 1810 | Medium | flammable |
R-410A | 2088 | Zero | Not flammable |
R-32 | 675 | Zero | Not flammable |
R-134A | 1430 | Zero | Not flammable |
R-290 | 3 | Zero | flammable |
R-600A | 3 | Zero | flammable |

Is It Possible To Upgrade The Refrigerants?
You cannot upgrade for R-22 but you do upgrade R-410A.
R-22 is the old refrigerant in your AC which is hard to renew because of the following reasons:
- According to the rules, EPA seems not to expect you to renew your AC instantly if this machine does not spring a refrigerant leakage.
- The depleting stocks of R-22 refrigerant could do the fixing extra expensive than it’s worth.
- They are non-interchangeable plus more inclined to breakdowns.
- Those refrigerants cause your AC to generate extra noise.
- These refrigerants can harm and damage the additional components of your Air conditioner.
- While those refrigerants become old then it needs to be carefully disposed of concerning to limit the harm of the atmosphere later they separated from the Air conditioner.
Is AC refrigerant leak dangerous?
Yes, it is a danger the severity depends on the refrigerators gas which used. It will Harm to the environment, a risk to humans and also harm to your AC. If it seems like leakage then repair it immediately.
Final Words:
Our earth gives space for us to live awesomely here. We have to thank back by protecting the environment. It is everyone responsibility to protect the environment from global warming and cutting ozone layer depletion.
To fulfill this goal, you should start using AC and refrigerators which is environmental friendly such as the R-290 and R-600A. If you use old AC which is not environmental friendly than change it to new AC models.
