Are you confused with AC tonnage calculation? Let we help you
While summer season gets entered the people start thinking of their AC plan. Let everyone have this question in their mind when you plan to buy an Air conditioner. This guide helps you to get the answer to your question.

Air Conditioner which we shortly called as AC consists of two types:
- Window AC
- Centralized / Normalized AC
This ACs are different in size and budget. You should choose a right one for your room. We are here to help you choosing a good one.
You can use this calculation to buy A.C. for your personal room, hall or any other office purpose. To determine the heating capacity of room you should consider Climate condition, age of the house, furnace’s output, total square feet and insulation of your furnace.
Actually, BTU which is called British Thermal Units is used to measure the cooling capacity of an AC system. This can be measured by the formulae.
Basic Form Of Calculation:
To calculate the size, multiply the length of the room or area. Then, a practical number, multiply by 25 BTU. Whether it’s a rainy, wet day or a hot, sunny, moist day, allows enough chill. Let’s be 12 feet wide 15 feet in that room. That means 12×15 = 180 square feet. The minimum BTU Air Conditioner you will be required 180×25 = 4500 BTU cooling capacity.
Formula
Total room square feet = Length * breadth * height |
Chart for your room size
ROOM AREA | BTU NEEDED |
100 to 149 | 5,000 BTU/hr = 0.41 Ton |
150 to 249 | 6,000 BTU/hr = 0.5 Ton |
250 to 299 | 7,000 BTU/hr = 0.58 Ton |
300 to 349 | 8,000 BTU/hr = 0.66 Ton |
350 to 399 | 9,000 BTU/hr = 0.75 Ton |
400 to 449 | 10,000 BTU/hr = 0.83 Ton |
450 to 599 | 12,000 BTU/hr = 1 Ton |
550 to 699 | 14,000 BTU/hr = 1.17 Ton |
700 to 999 | 18,000 BTU/hr = 1.5 Ton |
1,000 to 1,199 | 21,000 BTU/hr = 1.75 Ton |
1,200 to 1,399 | 23,000 BTU/hr = 1.91 Ton |
1,400 to 1,499 | 24,000 BTU/hr = 2 Ton |
1,500 to 1,999 | 30,000 BTU/hr = 2.5 Ton |
2,000 to 2,500 | 34,000 BTU/hr = 2.83 Ton |
BTU Required to heat a house:
House Age | Climate | BTU calc |
---|---|---|
New | Warm | 30 BTU |
Old | Warm | 35 BTU |
New | Cold | 50 BTU |
Old | Cold | 60 BTU |
So i give some of answers for your question below
In a room you can measure air conditioner’s efficiency by the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER). EER is the ratio of BTU to the input power watt.
General Questions raised when buying an AC:
- What size air conditioner do I need for 1500 square feet?
Absolutely you need 2.5 ton for good cooling.
- How much area does 1 ton AC cover?
The area must have the range of 450 to 599 square feet.
- What do you mean by 1.5-ton air conditioner?
18,000 BTU per hour= 1.5 Ton
- How many tons is 23000 Btu?
1.91 Ton is for 23000 Btu. It covers over the area 1,200 to 1,399.
Tips: Instead of a window air conditioner, installing a wall-mounted built-in air conditioner is actually the most efficient and best cooling unit. If you think of it, the window unit window will be much less in the room. Wall-mounted built-in units are usually placed on the floor by 5-6 feet.
Conclusion:
The above thing shows you the AC tonnage calculation for your room. Even though the calculation is here it also depends up the area you live ie. It depends upon the temperature of your location or surroundings, shade of your room , walls and materials made in the room , doors and bricks of the room, floor type of the room, wall and glass door thickness, airtight of the room, air moisture level and finally with square feet area of the room.
If the above-mentioned things are of high quality and the room constructed in perfect construction means the room will have good coolant capacity when it fitted by an AC.
And I suggest you that split AC gives better coolant to your room when compared to window AC. Hope you get some idea about the AC tonnage you need for your home. Just leave your doubts and comments in the below comment box.
