What’s is Kernel Panic on Mac?
A kernel panic is often caused by hardware errors or incorrect third-party kernel extensions. What it will do? It goes on restarting your Mac for no apparent reason. And the screen displays like below.
The reason behind the screen is that it is not able to handle the error/problems in the Mac. Because of this reason the Mac automatically shuts down.
It may be caused due to simple software error and will be fixed during restart. In complex cases, it may have the reason for the MAC software crashed even at the startup or the hardware damage in it.
Cause of Kernel Panic on Mac:
There are a lot of reasons there. Here is the list of the more common reason for causing this issue.
- Outdated drivers/plugins
- Broken disk permissions
- Conflicting apps
- Hardware issues
- Incompatible peripherals
- Not enough RAM
- Lack of hard drive space.
What are the solutions to fix Kernel Panic on Mac?
We may fix it in two ways according to our issue. It is caused by software then the software issue fix will solve it. Else the hardware issue problem will solve it.
Software solutions to fix Kernel Panic on Mac:
Method 1: Update all your software in mac
Go to App Store app and click on updates to view the latest updates for your Mac. If any tools are pending for updates for a longer period. This might be the reason for the Kernal problem.
Once you update the tool and check whether the problem gets rectified or not. If the problems still remain there then check with the below methods.
Method 2: Find out which applications are corrupted
Find out, when you are facing the issue?
If you encounter a problem when you are trying to open a particular application, there is a problem with that application.
What to do with that App?
Update the particular problematic app. If there is no update available showing there, then reinstall the App. Don’t forget to reboot your machine at last.
Note: Most of the issue caused because of your video cards, adapters, etc.. So don’t forget to update graphics, file system or networking |
Method 3: Repair Disk Permissions
This may cause due to access problems arise to reach files and folders. So help you disk to get the proper permission to work out smoothly.
Unfortunately, the option to manually adjust disk permissions is disabled in disk usage following OS X El Capitan.
If you are using OS X Yosemite or older OS Version, then follow the below steps.
1: Press Command + R to restart your MAC.
2: Go to Disk Utility.
3: Go to First Aid –> Repair Disk Permissions.
This will fix the permission issue.
Method 3: Check free space on the drive
Make sure you have enough free space on the drive. Apple recommends at least 20% free space on your startup drive. If there is a lack of space in mac then the issue arises commonly.
- Go to Apple menu –> About This Mac.
- Tap the Storage tab.
There you can see the free space availability.
Method 4: Disk Utility’s First Aid
The kernel panic can be caused by problems with corrupted files or external devices. Disk Utility First Aid Tool will help to diagnose and resolve any disk errors.
1. Go to Apple Menu. Restart it.
2. Go to Disk Utility– > First Aid at the time of restart.
Follow the instruction given on the screen.
Method 5: Disable Startup Items
More applications are placed during startup items, which can cause this kernel problem.
The processor get confused and stuck to choose the payload of applications. We need to rectify it.
- Go to System Preferences ––> Users & Groups.
- Tap your username in the menu.
- Switch to the Login Items tab.
- Choose a startup item to disable.
- Click the “–” symbol.
- Restart your Mac.
Now the new changes are enabled.
Hardware solutions to fix Kernel Panic on Mac:
Method 1: Turn off peripheral devices
If you’re plugged in too many peripherals with your Mac. Unplug all peripherals like printers, external video cards, network adapters. Now you restart your Mac and connect one device at a time. It works fine, then check with another device. Repeat the process, until you find out the affected peripheral device.
I hope you find the affected device. Now restart your computer.
Method 2:
There is a built-in tool available in Apple Diagnostics or Apple Hardware Test.
- Disconnect all external devices.
- Go to Apple menu ––> Restart.
- Press & hold D while you restart the computer.
